Well it looks like the judge doesn't think it was that serious. NO JAIL - just a suspended sentence.

Well at least they got a bit more than a suspended sentence!
|
150 hours of community service, a curfew, confiscation of metal detecting equipment, compensation for damage caused to the scheduled monument, and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders that restrict use of metal detecting equipment.
I'd be interested to know what the restriction is on metal detecting Mick.

| So basically they got away Scott free? I will put a tenner down that they won't even do a minute of community service..... Why? There was a local paper article a while back from an ex-case worker who said the system is past breaking point and that tens of thousands of community service hours are never done and never persued! Due to a severe lack of case officers and an unprecedented amount of officers on sick leave due to stress and anxiety. If it wasn't so serious I would pee myself laughing if I was an offender.

With the current State of the Prisons in our country with overcrowding etc and the type of crime that was committed here,it was allways very unlikely that they would be jailed.
It cost,s the Tax payer allot to keep a prisoner in Jail today, and it was clearly not a severe enough Crime to warrent a custodial sentence.
It also has allot to do with the age of one of the assailants and the fact that both may or may not have had previous convictions.
Saying all that, it does not send out the right messages to these Vagabonds does it.

| well in my honest opinion they both should have been given 2 months supply of Viagra and no wimin.... that would have been a stiffer sentence.

A fair sentence ..except the asbo..don`t agree with that...how is it anti social?....
When theres stricter sentencing for house breaking and car theft etc...then we can all get upperty about detecting without permission.!!

they should have been tagged with a GPS tracker and made to report to the rozzers every day to explain thier movements, a night time curfew is pointless does the judge not realise that "nighthawking" happens at all times of the day and is a generic term?.....
in my view there should be a list of convicted hawkers given to detector dealers so they are not allowed to buy a machine, ok i know that there are other outlets to get hold of them but its a start innt??

It has been brought up on 'a certain person's' blog that the picture is very unusual. Would hawkers dig trenches with straight sides, trowel the surface, heap up the topsoil & remove larger stones? I think there's more to this than just ordinary detectorists hawking
